The Shard, also known as Glass Shard, Shard London Bridge and formerly the London Bridge Tower, is an 87-story skyscraper in Southwark, London, which is part of the development of the London Bridge Quarter. Shard Construction started in March 2009; it was topped out on March 30, 2012 and inaugurated on July 5, 2012. Standing about 309 meters (1,014 feet) high, the Shard is the tallest building in the EU. The Shard is also the second tallest building free-standing structure in England, after a concrete tower at Emley Moor emitter station. The pyramid tower glass has 72 floors that can be inhabited, with a view of the gallery and open observation deck on the 72nd floor, at an altitude of 244.3 meters (802 feet). The building was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and replaced Southwark Towers, a 24-storey office block built in 1975. The Shard was developed by Sellar Property on behalf of LBQ Ltd and jointly owned by Sellar Property and the State of Qatar.
