Differences Between Letters V and W
V represents a voiced labiodental fricative. The organ of articulation is the lower lip, which is applied to the top teeth, thus making a labiodental sound. The manner of articulation is fricative, which means it is produced by constricting air flow through a narrow channel at the place of articulation, causing turbulence. The phonation is voiced, which means the vocal cords vibrate during the articulation.
W represents a voiced labio-velar approximant. It also involves the lower lip, but it is classed as a labialized velar, which means the main organ of articulation is the tongue, the back part of which is raised toward the soft palate (the velum), while as a secondary articulation the lips are rounded. The manner of articulation is not fricative but approximant, which means it is produced by narrowing the vocal tract at the place of articulation, but not enough to produce turbulence. As with the V sound the phonation is voiced.
The two sounds have two things in common: they are both voiced and involve the lower lip. Apart from that they are different. They are different in place of articulation, as V is labiodental (involves the top teeth) while W is velar (involves the soft palate) with a side order of bilabial (involves both lips) or lip-rounding. Even if you want to re-analyse a W as a velarised bilabial approximant it still involves the velum, and it still involves the top lip and not the top teeth.
They are also different in manner of articulation, as V is a fricative (a rubbing sound, involving a narrow airflow that creates ‘turbulence’) while W is an approximant (a weaker sound, involving a wider airflow with no turbulence). So as you can see, they are very much not the same sound.
