About Dome of The Rock Colouring Page

The Dome of Rock is an octagonal octagonal stone dome built by the Caliph Abdul Malik during the Ummayah Dynasty. Initially Caliph Abdul Malik built the Dome of Rock first in the Al-Haram complex Asy Syarif and then his son, Walid built the Aqsa Mosque. Actually the Dome of Rock is not a mosque, but a sanctuary. The octagonal shape reminds us of the Christian Martyrs, the shape of the dome resembles Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (now Istanbul) and the Holy Cemetery, while the circular way reminds us of the thawaf that is to walk around the Ka’bah in Mecca during Hajj or Umrah.

The Dome of Rock is located in the center of Masjid Aqsa. Actually this building does not work as a place of worship. We do not know what Abdul Malik’s goal is to build this building, many think that it is a symbol of the success and luxury of the caliph itself.

Once completed, the Dome of Stone has a tremendous appeal to Muslims and non-Muslims. Its gold dome is sparkling in the sun easily found in the middle of Jerusalem. The Dome of Rock can be likened to the temples built by Solomon and Herod as one of the most successful sacred buildings ever built, and in the 21st century the Dome of Rock has become the symbol of the highest secular obligation, the sanctuary of the revival of Islam and the symbol of Palestine nationalism.
