In 1762, King George III purchased nearly 200 paintings and drawings by Venetian artist Canaletto from the art collector, Joseph Smith.

The artwork was originally bought to decorate King George III’s new London residence, Buckingham House (Palace) and now forms part of Royal Collection Trust.

Opening on 19 May at The Queen’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace, Royal Collection Trust’s exhibition ‘Canaletto & the Art of Venice’ showcases one of the finest groups of works by Canaletto in the world.
